I recently embarked on a new endeavor. A new direction, you might say. I took a lot of time to pray and think and seek wise counsel, and then I grabbed my resolve and my big girl panties and jumped.
And then at 6am on a Monday morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “Are you nuts?? Who do you think you are?!” Laughing as I said this, of course. Here is why:
- I am not a morning person. I am not a morning person. I am not a morning person.
- Taking a leap of faith sounds fine and dandy until you actually do it.
- Growing up is scary.
- What does “business casual” even mean??
But guess what? I put on my eyeliner, turned on those google maps, and drove an hour away to the big city and my big girl job.
And surprisingly, everything was okay! Magnificent, even. I survived my first week, I learned a lot of new skills, and I think it’s going to work out just fine.
It’s amazing how that works out. Y’all. I have so many dreams and plans and “wouldn’t it be cool if”s for my life. Dreaming and scheming is so fun – it’s where limits don’t exist and nothing is really ever too big. But the hard part is deciding to go after some of those things. What are you going to choose? How are you going to do it? Are you ready to work harder than you’ve ever worked before? Are you willing to sacrifice some things to chase after your dreams?
Sometimes you don’t even know where to begin. It’s so overwhelming and life is so busy and you don’t know who you are or what you’re doing or what you’re going to eat for dinner. That’s why I’m so glad that I serve a God who DOES know the plan. He put those dreams in my heart and he knows what’s up.
Something I’ve really taken to heart lately is that the dreams we have and the things that set our soul on fire are not unfounded. They’re not just there to taunt us and show us what our life could be like – they have a purpose. Our heavenly Father put them there. He didn’t give them to anyone else, he gave them to YOU. They may look and sound like someone else’s dream at times, but they’re not. They’re uniquely, inherently yours. What an amazing thought! So what are you going to do with them?
I know what I’m going to do. I’m going to take that fire and move. Move in a direction. Any direction. I’m placing those God-given dreams back into the hands of my Creator and saying, “I trust you to fulfill this purpose you’ve given me.” It would be so easy to just wait around for a physical, audible answer, but we don’t live in Old Testament times anymore. That’s where faith comes in. He’s held up his end of the bargain – am I going to hold up mine?
What it really all boils down to is this – I have one life and it would be a shame to waste it by wondering “what if” and being too afraid to jump. So grab your eyeliner and your GPS and let’s go.
